Overview

Working in Kuwait — what you need to know

Kuwait holds a special place in Nepali foreign employment history — it was one of the earliest Gulf destinations and continues to recruit primarily through the Visa 18 (Work Permit) system. Kuwait's economy is oil-driven and relatively sheltered from the diversification pressures facing Saudi Arabia and UAE, meaning baseline demand for construction, driving, cleaning and hospitality remains steady. The Kuwaiti Dinar is the world's highest-valued currency — KWD 1 ≈ NPR 430 — which means even modest monthly salaries of KWD 100–150 translate to NPR 43,000–65,000. Kuwait City, Al Ahmadi (oil sector) and Jahra are the main employment hubs.

Why this destination

Why Nepali workers choose Kuwait

Kuwaiti Dinar is the world's strongest currency — KWD 100 ≈ NPR 43,000

Long-established Gulf destination with mature labour-rights framework

Strong demand in driving (Visa 18) and cleaning sectors with stable contracts

Lower entry costs than Saudi or UAE for similar wage scales

Savings potential

Accommodation is typically employer-provided in Kuwait. A driver earning KWD 120/month (≈ NPR 52,000) who saves 60% can remit NPR 31,000 monthly. Cleaning staff on KWD 80–100 can save NPR 20,000–28,000 after food and mobile costs.

Visa & DOFE process

Step-by-step: Nepal to Kuwait

Kuwait deployment takes 35–50 days: DOFE pre-approval, GAMCA medical, Ministry of Interior Kuwait attestation, Nepal Embassy visa stamping (10–14 days), and PDO. Kuwait Visa 18 (domestic) and Visa 20 (driver) are the most common categories. Our Kuwait desk verifies all sponsor details against MSAL records before workers depart.

Labour law protections

Kuwait's Labour Law No. 6 of 2010 covers private-sector workers: 30 days paid annual leave, 15 days sick leave, weekly rest (Friday), and end-of-service gratuity of 15 days per year for the first five years. Kuwait does not yet have a WPS system comparable to UAE or Qatar, meaning workers should ensure salary bank-account evidence is agreed in the contract.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about working in Kuwait

Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to Kuwait?+

Yes — provided you go through a DOFE-approved agency like Glocal Workforce Nepal. Your contract must be attested by both governments, your Labour Permit issued before departure, and you must attend the Pre-Departure Orientation. Avoid anyone offering free-visa or free-ticket deals without DOFE registration — these are the primary fraud vector.

What type of visa do Nepali workers need for Kuwait?+

The standard visa type is the Work Permit (Visa 18). Your employer initiates the visa process by submitting a demand letter to the relevant authority in Kuwait. Glocal Workforce Nepal handles the embassy attestation and visa stamping after DOFE pre-approval.

How much does it cost to go to Kuwait from Nepal?+

Total deployment cost depends on the destination and role. All legitimate costs are within DOFE-approved limits: typically NPR 70,000–150,000 covering agency fee, medical examination, DOFE service charge, visa fee, and pre-departure orientation. Use our DOFE Fee Estimator for an itemised breakdown, or contact us directly for a quote.

What documents are required to work in Kuwait?+

Standard requirements are: valid passport (minimum 6 months remaining validity beyond your contract end), recent passport photos (4 copies), academic/trade-test certificates, CV, and GAMCA-approved medical fitness certificate. Gulf countries also require a biometric registration on arrival. We provide a country-specific checklist when you are shortlisted.

How long is the flight from Kathmandu to Kuwait?+

The flight from Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu to Kuwait is approximately 5 hours. Direct flights operate daily on Air Arabia, Emirates, Flydubai and Nepal Airlines.

Can I change my employer in Kuwait after arriving?+

Most Gulf countries now allow employer transfer after the first contract year without sponsor consent — a result of post-2020 kafala reforms in UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait and Oman have similar provisions under labour law. Your contract governs specific terms.

How do I send money home from Kuwait?+

Major remittance channels available in Kuwait include IME, Prabhu, Western Union, and MoneyGram, all supporting direct NPR transfers to Nepali bank accounts. NRNA (Non-Resident Nepali Association) in Kuwait can advise on the best local options.
