Overview

Working in Saudi Arabia — what you need to know

Saudi Arabia is Nepal's largest single source of remittance — over 700,000 Nepali workers are employed across the Kingdom, primarily in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Mecca and Medina. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 mega-projects represent a generational construction and hospitality investment. NEOM — the 170 km linear city under construction in the Tabuk province — alone plans to employ hundreds of thousands of workers. The Red Sea Project, Diriyah, Qiddiya, and the King Salman Park in Riyadh add further demand. Our team has longstanding relationships with Saudi construction companies, Aramco-linked contractors, and major hotel groups such as Marriott and IHG operating in the Kingdom.

Savings potential

Construction and factory workers in Saudi Arabia receive accommodation and food from employers, enabling savings of NPR 25,000–55,000 monthly depending on grade. Skilled workers (electricians, HVAC, QC inspectors, hospital technicians) on higher salaries can remit NPR 60,000–120,000 monthly. The riyal's peg to the USD provides remittance predictability.

Visa & DOFE process

Step-by-step: Nepal to Saudi Arabia

Saudi deployment from Nepal takes 35–55 days: DOFE pre-approval, GAMCA medical (Kathmandu clinic, results within 3 days), MOFA Saudi Arabia contract attestation, Iqama pre-verification, Nepal Embassy visa stamping (10–15 days), and a 1-day PDO. Driving roles require a Saudi-compatible driving-licence evaluation. Domestic workers must complete a government-certified skills course before departure.

Worker rights and legal protections in Saudi Arabia

Labour law protections

Saudi Arabia's 2021 Labour Reform Initiative (LRI) was transformative: workers can now change employers after completing the first contract year without needing sponsor approval, provided labour courts are not involved. Exit and re-entry visas were replaced with a notification system — workers on good standing do not need employer permission to leave temporarily. The WPS covers most private-sector workers.

The Absher digital platform allows workers to check their residency (Iqama) status, report violations, and access government services. All employment contracts are submitted to MHRSD (Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development) for verification. The Nepal Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah provide consular and labour-welfare services.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about working in Saudi Arabia

Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to Saudi Arabia?+

Yes — provided you go through a DOFE-approved agency like Glocal Workforce Nepal. Your contract must be attested by both governments, your Labour Permit issued before departure, and you must attend the Pre-Departure Orientation. Avoid anyone offering free-visa or free-ticket deals without DOFE registration — these are the primary fraud vector.

What type of visa do Nepali workers need for Saudi Arabia?+

The standard visa type is the Iqama Work Visa. Your employer initiates the visa process by submitting a demand letter to the relevant authority in Saudi Arabia. Glocal Workforce Nepal handles the embassy attestation and visa stamping after DOFE pre-approval.

How much does it cost to go to Saudi Arabia from Nepal?+

Total deployment cost depends on the destination and role. All legitimate costs are within DOFE-approved limits: typically NPR 70,000–150,000 covering agency fee, medical examination, DOFE service charge, visa fee, and pre-departure orientation. Use our DOFE Fee Estimator for an itemised breakdown, or contact us directly for a quote.

What documents are required to work in Saudi Arabia?+

Standard requirements are: valid passport (minimum 6 months remaining validity beyond your contract end), recent passport photos (4 copies), academic/trade-test certificates, CV, and GAMCA-approved medical fitness certificate. Gulf countries also require a biometric registration on arrival. We provide a country-specific checklist when you are shortlisted.

How long is the flight from Kathmandu to Saudi Arabia?+

The flight from Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu to Saudi Arabia is approximately 5 hours. Direct flights operate daily on Air Arabia, Emirates, Flydubai and Nepal Airlines.

Can I change my employer in Saudi Arabia after arriving?+

Most Gulf countries now allow employer transfer after the first contract year without sponsor consent — a result of post-2020 kafala reforms in UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait and Oman have similar provisions under labour law. Your contract governs specific terms.

How do I send money home from Saudi Arabia?+

Major remittance channels available in Saudi Arabia include IME, Prabhu, Western Union, and MoneyGram, all supporting direct NPR transfers to Nepali bank accounts. NRNA (Non-Resident Nepali Association) in Saudi Arabia can advise on the best local options.
