How It Works

Understanding the Bikram Sambat calendar

Nepal officially uses the Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar alongside the Gregorian (AD) calendar used internationally. Knowing how they relate helps explain why the conversion isn't a simple fixed number of years.

A lunisolar calendar

Bikram Sambat tracks the actual solar year rather than a fixed pattern, so each of its 12 months runs between 29 and 32 days. The month lengths are set year by year, which is why the same Nepali month can be a different length in two different BS years.

Roughly 56 to 57 years ahead

BS began in 57 BCE, so the Nepali year is consistently ahead of the English year by 56 or 57 years. Because the Nepali New Year falls around mid-April rather than 1 January, the gap changes partway through the AD year, which is the main reason a simple subtraction doesn't work reliably.

Used for official documents

Citizenship certificates, birth certificates, land ownership papers and most domestic Nepali paperwork are dated in BS. Passports carry both calendars. This is exactly where conversion becomes necessary, since most destination-country visa systems only accept the AD date.

For Foreign Employment

Why Nepali workers need accurate date conversion

A wrong or approximate date conversion can delay a visa application, a medical report or a DOFE labour permit by weeks. Here's where it matters most.

Visa and embassy applications

Gulf, European and East Asian embassies require the AD date of birth and document issue dates. An incorrect conversion on a visa form is a common cause of processing delays.

Age verification

DOFE and most foreign employers require workers to be at least 18 years old on the Gregorian calendar at the time of departure. Converting your BS birth date confirms your exact AD age before you apply.

Medical and insurance reports

GAMCA and other destination-country medical clearances are valid for a fixed number of days from the test date. Converting the BS test date to AD lets you track the exact expiry against your visa timeline.

Contract and passport dates

Employment contracts, passport issue and expiry dates, and DOFE labour permits are typically written in AD once you're dealing with a foreign employer, even though your source documents in Nepal are in BS.

FAQ

Common questions about Nepali date conversion

How do I convert an English date to the Nepali date (BS)?

Pick 'English (AD) to Nepali (BS)' above, choose your date from the calendar picker, and the Bikram Sambat equivalent appears instantly, in both English and Devanagari script, along with the weekday and month name.

How do I convert a Nepali BS date to English (AD)?

Pick 'Nepali (BS) to English (AD)' above, select the BS year, month and day from the dropdowns, and the converter shows the matching Gregorian date. This is the direction most people need when filling in foreign visa forms or embassy paperwork that only accepts AD dates.

Why is the Nepali BS year different from the English AD year?

Bikram Sambat is a lunisolar calendar that started in 57 BCE, so BS is roughly 56 to 57 years ahead of the Gregorian AD calendar. The exact gap shifts through the year because Nepali New Year falls in mid-April, not January, so for part of the year the difference is 56 years and for the rest it is 57.

How many months are in the Nepali calendar, and how many days does each have?

The Bikram Sambat calendar has 12 months: Baisakh, Jestha, Asar, Shrawan, Bhadra, Aswin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun and Chaitra. Unlike the fixed-length Gregorian months, each Nepali month can run 29 to 32 days, and the exact length can change slightly from year to year because BS is calculated against the actual solar year rather than a fixed pattern like AD leap years.

When does the Nepali New Year fall in the English calendar?

Nepali New Year (1 Baisakh) usually falls on 13, 14 or 15 April in the Gregorian calendar. The exact date depends on the length of the preceding Nepali year. See the year-by-year table below for confirmed dates.

Which date format do DOFE and Nepali government documents use?

Nepali citizenship certificates, birth certificates, land documents and most domestic government paperwork are dated in Bikram Sambat. Passports show both BS and AD. Foreign employment paperwork such as visa applications, embassy attestation and overseas medical reports almost always require the AD equivalent, which is exactly what this converter is for.

What date range does this converter support?

This tool covers Bikram Sambat years 2000 to 2090, which corresponds to roughly 14 April 1943 to 12 April 2034 in the Gregorian calendar. That range comfortably covers birth dates, citizenship dates and any near-term planning most users need.

Can I use this to check my age for a foreign job or visa application?

Yes. Convert your Nepali (BS) date of birth from your citizenship certificate to the AD equivalent, then compare it against today's date. Most Gulf and European employers, and Nepal's own Department of Foreign Employment, require workers to be at least 18 on the AD calendar at the time of departure.
