Role Overview

What is a Welder overseas?

Welders — particularly 6G-certified pipeline welders — represent some of the highest-earning Nepali workers overseas. The oil and gas infrastructure of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait requires thousands of high-integrity pipeline welds annually, and the shortage of qualified welders globally keeps wages elevated even as other construction salaries plateau. A Nepali welder with an ASME 6G certification and two years of pipeline experience can realistically earn NPR 180,000–280,000 per month, with hazard-pay supplements on offshore or field assignments.

Entry-level welders (2G, 3G certified) find steady employment in structural-steel fabrication, shipbuilding support, and general construction. Moving up to 6G (all-position pipe welding to ASME IX standards) is the most valuable qualification upgrade available to any blue-collar Nepali worker overseas. The 6G test requires a high degree of manual skill and takes most welders 6–12 months of dedicated practice to achieve from a 3G base.

MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and SMAW (stick) welders find work across all sectors. TIG welders who can work stainless steel and aluminium are in demand for pharmaceutical and food-processing plants in Europe. Structural welders find work in shipyards and bridge fabrication across Asia. GWN has a dedicated skilled-trades team that matches welder certifications to the correct employer test standard to maximise trade-test pass rates.

The Work

What does a welder actually do?

A detailed look at the day-to-day responsibilities and typical working environment for this role overseas.

Key responsibilities

  • Weld pipes, plates and structural components to specified standards
  • Read welding procedure specifications (WPS) and execute joints accordingly
  • Perform pre-weld preparation and post-weld inspection
  • Pass on-site trade tests as required by employer
  • Maintain welding equipment and follow strict safety protocols
A typical day

Oil & gas and pipeline welders work intense shifts of 10–12 hours, often in remote field locations with rotation schedules (28 days on / 14 off common). Industrial welders work standard 8-hour shifts. Both come with hazard-pay premiums.

What the trade test involves

The welding trade test is the gold standard of overseas placement assessments. For 3G (vertical position), candidates weld a plate joint in the 3F and 3G positions and the sample is bend-tested or X-rayed. For 6G (pipe, 45° inclined), the candidate welds a pipe coupon in the fixed 6G position — the most challenging standard position in welding. Employer representatives witness the test at a licensed testing centre. Radiographic testing (X-ray) of the coupon must show less than the allowable porosity, inclusions or lack of fusion. GWN partners with several Kathmandu welding training centres to provide paid practice time before trade-test dates.
