Of all the preparations a Nepali worker can make before migrating, training and certification deliver the highest return. The difference between an unskilled and a skilled placement is not marginal — it is often a 2–4× difference in monthly income, better employer quality, better accommodation and far stronger legal protections. This guide covers every major training pathway available in Nepal for international migration.
CTEVT skill training
The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT)is Nepal's national vocational authority, established under the CTEVT Act 1989. CTEVT-affiliated training centres operate in every district. Their certificates are:
- Recognised by Nepal's DOFE for skilled-trade labour-permit applications
- Accepted by most Gulf countries' trade-test evaluation teams
- Accepted by Korean EPS and Japanese SSW sector-specific skills assessments
- Convertible under CTEVT's RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) for returning migrants
Technical trades — popular courses
- Welder — Course: 3 months (Level 1 covers 1G, 2G, 3G flat and horizontal position welding). Specialisation: 6G pipeline welding (additional 1 month) — highest salary potential in the Gulf (NPR 250,000–400,000/month). Skills tested: SMAW, MIG, TIG as applicable.

Language training
Korean — EPS-TOPIK
South Korea's Employment Permit System (EPS) requires every Nepali worker to pass the EPS-TOPIK (Employment Permit System Test of Proficiency in Korean) before applying for an E-9 work visa. This is a government-to-government system with strict rules:
- Official coordinator: EPS Centre Nepal, Buddhanagar, Kathmandu (+977 1 4783480).
- Test format: Computer-Based Test (CBT) with reading (40 questions) and listening (40 questions). Duration: 70 minutes.
- Test frequency: 2–3 scheduled test sessions per year. Registration opens via EPS Centre Nepal.
- Preparation course length: 4–6 months intensive study (2–3 hours/day). Total cost for preparation course: NPR 25,000–60,000.
- Test fee: Approximately NPR 28,000 (subject to annual revision).
- Pass score: Varies by sector and year — typically 80/200 for manufacturing; higher for food service and healthcare.
- After passing: You are placed in the HRD Korea 'roster' — employers in Korea browse the roster and select workers. Waiting time after passing: 6 months to 2+ years depending on sector and quota.
Important: EPS-TOPIK certification alone does not guarantee departure. You must also pass a sector-specific skills test and be selected by a Korean employer. The entire process from exam to departure typically takes 1–2 years. Start early.
Japanese — JFT-Basic and JLPT
Japan's Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa requires:
- JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation Test): A2 level Japanese. Tests reading, listening and basic language use in everyday situations. Administered by the Japan Foundation in Kathmandu (2–4 times/year). Cost: approximately NPR 8,000 per test. Preparation: 4–6 months for most Nepali learners. Accepted for all 14 SSW sectors.
- JLPT N4/N3: The Japan Language Proficiency Test — more widely known globally but harder than JFT-Basic. N4 is required for some SSW sectors; N3 is required for caregiver (kaigo) positions. Preparation for N4: 6–9 months. Test held twice per year (July and December) in Kathmandu.
- SSW skills tests: Sector-specific practical skills assessments conducted in Kathmandu by Japanese industry associations (OTAFF for care, OTAFF for food service, JA for agriculture, etc.). Schedule and registration via the Japan Foundation Nepal and accredited agencies.
Top Kathmandu Japanese language institutes (verify JF accreditation): Language Point, Nippon Language Academy, Japan Language Center Nepal, Samurai Language School.
English — IELTS, OET, B1/B2
English language certification is required for:
- UK Skilled Worker visa: IELTS Academic/UKVI minimum 5.0–6.5 depending on role. OET accepted for healthcare professionals.
- Germany Blue Card: B2 level minimum (Goethe Institute certification or equivalent).
- Healthcare roles in EU/Israel: B2 English or higher for nurses, caregivers in English-medium healthcare settings.
- General advantage: IELTS Band 5.5+ significantly improves placement prospects even for non-English-medium destinations — it signals educational level and adaptability.
IELTS test centres in Nepal: British Council Nepal (Kathmandu), IDP Nepal (Kathmandu and Pokhara). Cost: NPR 22,000–26,000 per test. Full preparation course: NPR 25,000–40,000 over 3–4 months.
Arabic — basic professional Arabic
Not a certification requirement, but basic Arabic (50–100 hours of study) significantly improves day-to-day life quality and workplace communication in Gulf countries. Several Kathmandu institutes offer basic Gulf Arabic courses (NPR 5,000–15,000 for a 6-week course). Particularly valuable for workers in construction, manufacturing and domestic service where supervisors may not speak English.
Caregiving training
Nepal is an increasingly major source of caregivers for Israel, the UK, Germany and Japan — all facing ageing-population pressures. Caregiving routes require formal certification:
- Nepal Nursing Council (NMC) accredited caregiver course: 6 months (theory + clinical placement at a hospital or care facility). Cost: NPR 50,000–80,000. Upon completion, you receive an NMC-recognised caregiver certificate usable for Israel, UK and EU placement.
- Japan nursing aide (kaigo): Requires JLPT N3 or above, plus a caregiving skills test administered by OTAFF in Kathmandu. A combination that takes approximately 12–18 months to prepare for.
- UK care worker: IELTS 5.0+, basic caregiver training, and a Care Certificate (issued by UK employer in the first 12 weeks of employment). Most UK care employers accept Nepali applicants with NMC-recognised certificates and relevant experience.
Driving licence — heavy vehicle
Nepal's heavy vehicle driving licence (issued by the Department of Transport Management — DoTM) opens up heavy-driver positions in Gulf countries paying NPR 100,000–180,000/month. The licence conversion process varies:
- UAE: Nepal driving licence converts via a practical test at the UAE traffic authority. Most Nepali heavy-vehicle drivers pass on first attempt.
- Qatar and Saudi: Similar conversion process. Nepali licences are recognised under bilateral arrangements.
- Korea: Korean driving licence requires a full test; Nepali licence is not directly convertible but grants exemption from some theoretical modules.
To obtain a Nepal heavy-vehicle licence: apply at DoTM, complete the mandatory driving school (NPR 15,000–25,000), pass written and practical tests. Total process: 3–4 months.
Trade test centres in Nepal
Several DOFE-registered skills testing centres in Kathmandu conduct Gulf employer trade tests for free (when arranged by the employer via the agency):
- National Skills Testing Board (NSTB): Government trade testing authority under CTEVT
- Vocational Training Centre (VTC) Kathmandu: Official Gulf employer evaluation hosting centre
- Employer-sponsored trade test camps: Many Gulf employers send evaluation teams to Kathmandu 2–4 times per year; Glocal Workforce Nepal can notify you when these occur for your target trade
How to choose a training institute
- Verify CTEVT/NMC/Japan Foundation affiliation on the official website of the relevant council before paying any fees.
- Ask for past-student references and contact them — ask specifically: "Did you get placed through this institute's connections? What was the actual salary?"
- Check the placement track record — legitimate institutes have documented placements with specific employers.
- Reject 'guaranteed visa with training' offers. Training and visa approval are entirely separate. No institute can guarantee visa approval — ever.
- Compare fees across 3–4 institutes for the same course. Significant price variation for the same CTEVT-affiliated course is a signal worth investigating.
