Airport & Travel Tips

Preparing for your first international flight

For many Nepali migrant workers, this will be their first time flying. These tips will help you travel confidently and without stress.

Arrive at TIA at least 3 hours early

Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu can be congested, especially during holiday periods and Dashain season. Queues at check-in and immigration can be long. Arrive 3 hours before international flights to be safe.

Carry important documents in your hand luggage

Keep your passport, Labour Permit, employment visa, demand letter and air ticket in your hand luggage — never in checked baggage. If your checked bag is lost or delayed, you must still be able to clear immigration at your destination.

Inform your family of your flight details

Share your flight number, airline, departure time and expected arrival time with your family before you leave. Many workers share a screenshot of their e-ticket with family WhatsApp groups. In emergencies, this helps family quickly identify your flight.

Keep cash in multiple currencies

Carry small amounts in both NPR and the destination currency (AED, QAR, PLN, etc.) for airport expenses and the first few days. Do not carry large amounts of cash — use your bank card or a remittance app for larger amounts.

Time Zone Adjustment

Managing the time zone difference

Nepal Standard Time (NPT) is UTC+5:45 — an unusual offset that is 15 minutes ahead of most of South Asia. This means your time zone difference to most destinations is not a round number.

Gulf countries are approximately 2h 45m behind NPT. If your family calls at 8 PM Nepal time, it is 5:15 PM in Dubai. This small gap makes daily calls easy and is one reason many workers prefer Gulf placements for their first contract.

Europe (Poland, Romania) is typically 4h 30m behind NPT in winter (5h 30m in summer due to daylight saving). An 8 PM call from Nepal reaches Poland at 3:30 PM — still a workable calling window.

South Korea is 2h 45m ahead of NPT. Japan is 3h 15m ahead. This means an 8 PM Nepal call arrives at 10:45 PM in Seoul or 11:15 PM in Tokyo — harder for daily contact but manageable with weekend calls.

FAQ

Common questions about flights and travel

Does my employer cover the air ticket?

For most Gulf placements through licensed agencies, the employer covers the first one-way air ticket. This is called 'free ticket' and should be stated in your employment contract. For European, Korean and Japanese destinations, workers typically pay their own first ticket, though some employers reimburse this cost after 3–6 months of employment. Always confirm in writing before signing.

What is the best time to book a cheap ticket?

If you are paying your own ticket, book 4–6 weeks in advance for the best economy fares. Peak seasons (Dashain/Tihar holidays in October–November) see significantly higher fares. Avoid one-way bookings at the last minute — book as soon as your visa is confirmed. Qatar Airways, Emirates and Turkish Airlines often have competitive fares from Kathmandu.

Do I need a transit visa if I have a layover?

It depends on your nationality, the transit country and the layover duration. Nepali passport holders require a transit visa for some countries (notably the UK). For Gulf transit (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi), Nepali workers with a valid destination-country visa are typically exempt from transit visa requirements for short layovers under 24 hours. Confirm with your airline when booking.

What documents do I need at the airport in Kathmandu?

You need your valid passport, the DOFE Labour Permit (Shram Anumati), your employment visa, the employer's demand letter or appointment letter, and your air ticket. DOFE officials at TIA (Tribhuvan International Airport) may check these documents before departure. Workers without a valid Labour Permit can be stopped from boarding.
